RALEIGH, N.C. - University of Richmond sophomore Tim Stauffer threw his fourth consecutive complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out a career-high 13 batters, to lead the Spiders to a 4-2 win against North Carolina State at Doak Field.
Propelling the Spiders to their second win of the three-game series, Stauffer improved to 5-0 on the season. He did not allow an earned run in the contest and retired the Wolfpack in order six times. He now leads the staff with a 1.05 ERA and has struck out 31 batters in 43.0 innings.
The Richmond (12-1) offense received timely hitting, recording nine on the afternoon. Sophomore Adam Tidball went 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. His sixth-inning two-run homer proved to be the game-winning hit. Sophomore Bryan Pritz and junior David Reaver also collected two hits for the Spiders.
North Carolina State (13-5) starter Phillip Davidson struck out 11 in his complete game. He fell to 2-1 on the season after allowing four runs, all earned.
After a scoreless first, Richmond freshman Brian Ruscello lifted his second career triple over the centerfielder's head and Tidball motored around the bases to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Tidball drove a one-out single under the third baseman's glove to set up Ruscello.
The Spiders added a second run in the third when Reaver's second double of the game plated Bryan Pritz who had reached on an infield single.
The Wolfpack's Colt Morton led off the third with a bloop single to right field that ended Spider starter Tim Stauffer no-hit bid. The sophomore right-hander had carried a no-hitter to the fifth inning in each of his previous two starts.
N.C. State threatened in the fifth when Justin Riley led off with a single to right and Joe Gaetti followed with a walk. Stauffer stopped the rally by striking out Colt Morton and getting Adam Hargrave to line out to Reaver at third who then tossed to Craig at second and doubled off Riley.
Tidball smashed a no-doubt shot to left field in the sixth that gave Richmond a 4-0 lead. Tidball's two-run home run, his second of the season, scored Vito Chiaravalloti who had led off the inning with a left field single. Stauffer continued his mound dominance by striking out the side in the home half of the sixth.
The Wolfpack capitalized on two Richmond errors to score two unearned runs in the eighth. Morton reached on an error and then Hargrave walked. After a strikeout, Jeremy Dutton singled to right center that scored Morton. Chad Orvella then chopped a grounder that eluded first baseman Jim Fasano's glove and scored Hargrave. Stauffer got another ground ball out to end the threat and keep the score 4-2.
Richmond returns to Pitt Field for a 10-game homestand beginning on Wednesday, March 13 at 2:30 p.m. against William & Mary. The Spiders will also host Virginia Tech at 2:30 on Thursday, March 14 before entertaining Penn State for a two-game weekend set on March 16-17.
