Richmond, now 20-17 on the season, jumps back into Atlantic 10 Conference play as Dayton heads to Pitt Field. First pitch of the series opener on Friday is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
Sean Scanlon got the Spiders on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI double to right center to score Dylan Winebrenner from second. Winebrenner drew a walk then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
The Richmond offense exploded in the fifth inning. Aidan O'Keefe legged out an infield single then Jackson Kraemer drew a walk. Both moved up on a wild pitch and O'Keefe scored on Noah Harvey's base hit for the first run of the inning.
With two outs in the inning, Michael Elko picked up a two-RBI base hit, bringing in Kraemer and Harvey. Dylan Winebrenner launched his 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot 436 feet over the left center wall to give Richmond a 6-5 lead.
Ryan Recio picked up his sixth home run of the season in the sixth inning, depositing the ball 416 feet over the fence.
ODU battled back tin the seventh inning, scoring four runs on two hits, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and take a 9-7 lead.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Elko collected his second hit of the game, a double down the left field line. Winebrenner was intentionally walked and replaced at first by Joe Crenshaw. Both advanced on stolen bases before Noah Haught drew his own walk to load the bases. RJ Johnson Jr. tied the game at 9-all with a two-RBI base hit through the infield.
Justin Gay took to the mound in the bottom of the ninth, working around two base runners that reached on walks, to strikeout the side and force extras. The Spiders went down in order in the top of the 10th before ODU got the walk off RBI base hit to win the game.
On a staff day, Richmond used eight pitchers. Mauricio Rodriguez got the start, going one and two-thirds of a frame, allowing two runs on two hits, two walks, and two hit batters. Paul Witkop tossed one and a third of an inning, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits. Glenn Smith hit a little trouble in the first of three and a third of an inning, allowing two runs on three hits, but settled and tossed two scoreless frames with two strikeouts.
After Kellan Heney faced one batter, Evan Wilson got two outs while allowing two runs on two hits and a strikeout. Sam Young tossed a scoreless frame, stranding two that reached on walks and struck out two. Gay had a scoreless bottom of the ninth before turning the rock over to Chase Lawley. Lawley got two outs, but allowed a run to score on one hit, a UR miscue, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
