WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team posted a convincing victory in its first-ever Atlantic 10 contest, defeating George Washington, 18-5, Tuesday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Six different Spiders enjoyed multiple-goal games, headed by senior attack Alexis Brandolini's (West Chester, Pa.) four tallies.
Richmond opened with the game's first two goals, but GW cut its deficit in half eight minutes into the contest. From there, the Spiders scored the next five goals to take a commanding 7-1 lead, as they would hold a 9-3 advantage at the half.
The offensive surge continued after the intermission as Richmond recorded the game's next five goals to build an 11-goal lead. Sophomore attack Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) had two goals and an assist in the second half run. Richmond's scoring ended as freshman Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) twice put the ball between the pipes in the last seven minutes, her first collegiate goals, as Richmond would cruise to the 18-5 victory.
Brandolini did much of her damage in the first half, scoring three of her four goals before intermission, while also adding an assist. Senior attack Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass.) notched her 100th career goal in the game as she finished with three goals, raising her team-leading total to 15. Purcell also finished the afternoon with a hat-trick, along with three assists. In addition to Habicht, also chipping in with two goals on the afternoon were sophomore Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) and junior Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J.).
Spider junior goalkeeper Kelly Johnson (Crownsville, Md.) had little work on the afternoon as she was only called upon to make four saves. Casey Atkins made 10 saves for the Colonials as Richmond held an overwhelming 50-13 advantage in shots.
Richmond (4-2, 1-0) returns to action Thursday, March 21, at 3:30 p.m. as the Spiders host Davidson.
