Williamsburg, Va.. - University of Richmond sophomore Tim Stauffer threw the final 3.0 innings of one-hit shutout ball and improved to 8-0 on the season as the Spiders defeated William & Mary 4-2 and improved to 21-2 on the season. It marks the best start in Spider baseball history.
Junior David Reaver went 3-4 with two RBI to lead a Spider offense that managed just six hits off seven William & Mary pitchers. Tribe junior C.J. Stimson was saddled with the loss after allowing one run in 0.2 innings.
After a scoreless first, the Tribe opened the second with two singles. After a fly out, Richmond starter Derek Duclos turned a nice 1-6-3 double play to end any threat. Duclos then retired the Tribe in order for the first time in the third.
William & Mary engineered a run in the fourth when Kevin Healey reached safely after squibbing a dribbler past Duclos and scoring Marshall Hubbard who led off the frame with a walk. Duclos and sophomore Matt McLoughlin both pitched well to keep the game close.
The Spiders responded with a run in the fifth. Designated hitter A.J. Board began the frame with a sharp single to center and after John Cronin walked, a sac bunt attempt by Bryan Pritz failed when Board was gunned down at third. Reaver followed with an RBI single to right center that scored Cronin and moved Pritz to third. Pritz then scored when a failed pick off sailed past the third baseman and gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.
A Trey Wakefield RBI single in the fifth knotted the game 2-2. Wakefield brought home John Lentz who had singled and moved to third on excellent base running when Mitch Walk grounded out earlier in the frame.
Defensive replacement Bobby LeNoir knocked in the Spiders' third run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth that scored Vito Chiaravalloti. Richmond opened a little breathing room with another sacrifice run in the ninth. Board, who finished the game 2-4, walked to start the inning and was pulled for pinch-runner Michael Galligan. After an out, Pritz doubled down the right field line and moved Galligan to third. Reaver followed with a short fly to right that was caught and the ensuing throw home beat Galligan, but the sophomore jarred the ball loose and gave the Spiders' a 4-2 lead.
Richmond returns to Atlantic 10 action with a three-game series at Fordham this weekend. The Spiders and Rams will play a Noon doubleheader on Saturday, March 30 before completing the series with a Noon game on Sunday, March 31.
