LEXINGTON,Va. -- Richmond's Bryan Pritz and Michael Galligan had three RBI's each, while pitcher Andy Givens (2-0) allowed only three hits in six innings of work, as the University of Richmond defeated VMI, 10-2 in college baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field.
VMI (7-6) got on the board first in the opening frame when Givens balked in Chris Brooks from third base.
Richmond (9-0) got on the board in the third inning, scoring three times, courtesy of two VMI errors. Vito Chiaravalloti started the scoring when he singled in Brian Ruscello from third base. Pritz would score the second run for the Spiders, off a throwing error by VMI catcher Justin Briggs. Jim Fasano would drive in Chiaravalloti from third for the final run in the inning.
Richmond would score once in the fifth, capped off by a solo home run from Chiaravalloti. Richmond would extend its lead to 8-1, in the sixth inning courtesy of Galligan's three-run home run to center field. Richmond would score two more times, extending its lead to 10-1, courtesy of a two-run single by Pritz.
VMI would score a run in the eighth, courtesy of a Ben Rand sacrifice fly to right field.
Freshman Matt Smith along with Briggs had two hits each for VMI.
Richard Litwin (0-2) suffered the loss for the Keydets allowing four runs in five innings of work.
Richmond will look to tie a school record for best start in a season Wednesday when the Spiders visit crosstown rival VCU. The 1947 team opened the year 10-0. Game time at The Diamond is 4pm.
