Football Selects 2002 Team Captains

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond football team elected its four captains for the 2002 season in a vote taken by the team. Rising seniors Adrian Archie, Steve Boyer, Ramon Richeson and Randy West will serve as captains for eighth-year head coach Jim Reid next fall.
"To the man, these four outstanding student-athletes represent every great quality of the University of Richmond, their teammates and the great game of football," Reid said. "Anyone would be proud to call these fine young men their sons. We are blessed to have them and 78 other more young men just like them."
A native of Concord, N.C., Adrian Archie is an All-America candidate at linebacker. An All-Atlantic 10 honoree in 2001, Archie started all 11 games last season and led the team with 89 tackles. He recorded double-digit tackles four times and led the team in three games.
Steve Boyer started the final nine games and played in all 11 contests at defensive end. The Richmond, Va. native and Douglas Freeman product made 26 tackles, four for loss and one sack in 2001. Boyer earned Atlantic 10 All-Academic honors.
Ramon Richeson also started the final nine games and played in all 11 contests at safety. A native of Williamsburg, Va., Richeson ranked fourth on the team and led the secondary with 72 tackles. During the 2000 season, Richeson earned National Defensive Player of the Week after making eight tackles, two interceptions, one sack and one forced fumble against Maine.
A senior center, Randy West played in three games and made his first collegiate start at Northeastern on October 20. West played his prep football at Meadowbrook High School.
The Spiders begin the 2002 campaign at Temple on August 31. Richmond's first home game will be played on Sept. 7 against Delaware.
