UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Old Dominion used two home runs from Gary Lowther and James Burok's first collegiate complete game to sting the 22nd-ranked University of Richmond baseball team, 7-4, at Pitt Field. The loss snaps Richmond's nine-game win streak.
Lowther finished the game going 2-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, while teammate Brent Sollenberger went 3-5 with two RBI and one run scored to lead the Monarch (13-13) offense. Burok, making his seventh career start, threw 9.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits.
For the Spiders (24-3), junior Vito Chiaravalloti recorded the only multiple-hit game, going 2-4. Junior David Reaver extended his career-long hit streak to 20 games with a first-inning triple. That triple set up the game's first run when Matt Craig's infield single gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Richmond increased its lead with two runs in the second. Designated hitter David Thomas and right fielder John Cronin notched back-to-back singles. Thomas scored on a Bryan Pritz ground out and Cronin came home on a wild pitch.
Old Dominion tied the game with a three-run fourth. Sollenberger singled and scored ODU's first run on an Allen Strick base knock. After Spider starter Derek Duclos notched the second out, he surrendered a game-tying two-run home run to Lowther.
The Monarchs took the lead with three runs in the seventh. Lowther led off the frame with his second home run of the game. Later, Mike Croley and Demarque Hairston both scored on a Sollenberger single to right field.
Second baseman Brian Ruscello reached on an error and worked his way around to score on a Chris Dolan sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 6-4 after seven. Old Dominion took that run back on an RBI single from John Oehler that plated Lowther in the top of the eighth. It was Lowther's third run of the contest.
Richmond returns to action at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 at George Mason.
NOTE: University of Richmond sophomore Tim Stauffer earned Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season and for the second consecutive week after going 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA this past week. Stauffer earned his first win by pitching the final 3.0 innings at William & Mary on March 27 and then was victorious at Fordham, 5-1, on March 30. That win was his sixth complete game of the season and improved his record to 9-0.
