Senior Kristin Newkirk Earns Atlantic 10 Swimming Student-Athlete Of The Year

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Richmond senior Kristin Newkirk (Marietta, Ga.) earned Atlantic 10 swimming student-athlete of the year after enjoying a stellar year in the pool and in the classroom.
Newkirk carries a 3.55 GPA with a major in mathematics. At the Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship, she won both the 50-yard freestyle (23.71) and 100-yard butterfly (55.54) and was a member of four relay teams that finished first, including the 200-yard freestyle relay team which set a Conference record (1:34.20).
She finished in first place 13 times this year and was a member of 17 winning relay teams as Richmond held the fastest times in the Atlantic 10 in all five relays. Newkirk set the school record in the 50-yard freestyle (23.71) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.54) this season. A team captain, Newkirk earned All-Conference in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays, and the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays.
Joining Newkirk on the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team are junior Elizabeth Cook (3.58 in biology), junior Leigh Figh (3.35 in marketing) and sophomore Casey Dluhos (3.24/undeclared).
As a team, Richmond was selected national Academic All-America by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Spiders claimed the first conference championship for Richmond as an all-sports member of the Atlantic 10.
