Richmond Women's Lax Grabs Votes In National Poll

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. --- The University of Richmond garnered votes in this week's IWLCA Division I lacrosse poll to place 22nd in the country, its first ranking in 14 years. The Spiders at 10-5 are off to their best start ever. Their 10 wins match a single season high set in 1988.
Richmond, under first year head coach Sue Murphy, dot the national statistics as well. The Spiders rank 12th in scoring offense (12.2 ppg) and 14th in the nation in win percentage. In addition, Richmond is 10th in ground balls (29.27 per game) and 14th in caused turnovers (13.13 per game).
Individually, senior Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass.) and sophomore transfer Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) led the way. Aitken has netted a Spiders single season record and A-10 leading 44 goals this spring. Purcell broke the UR mark for assists in a single season, registering 25 already while scoring 33 goals. Purcell is ranked 20th nationally in points per game (3.73) and 16th in assists per game (1.53). Aitken is 15th in the country in goals per game (2.93).
The Spiders are currently 5-1 in their first season in the Atlantic 10. They entertain Saint Joseph's in their regular season finale this afternoon (Friday, April 26) at 3:30 p.m at President's Field. It is final home game for seven seniors: Aitken, Alexis Brandolini, Krissy Brandolini, Katie Chasney, Beth DiCalogero, Tracy Ransome and Amy Stringer.
