Lacrosse Wins Season Finale, 18-8

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. (April 26) -University of Richmond senior Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass.) tallied six goals in leading the Spiders to a 18-8 win over Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at President's Field on Senior Day. With her six scores, Aitken became Richmond's all-time goals scored leader with 135.
Sophomore Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) scored four times and added three assists for Richmond while junior Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) registered a hat trick with three goals (and one assist). The Spiders improve to 11-5, 6-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders eleven victories are the most in program history. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-10 overall, 1-5 A-10.
The tandem of Purcell and junior Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J.) put the Spiders up to stay. The duo combined on the first two scores less than 3:30 into the contest. Gallagher's score from four yards out at the 3:24 mark gave UR a 2-0 advantage. The Hawks soared back, as Brett Dymarczyk knotted the score at two less than five minutes into the contest. The score see-sawed as St. Joe's creeped to within one, 4-3 after a Lauren Foley bullet at the 14:02 mark. Richmond responded with a beautiful clear. Senior Tracy Ransome (Marlton, N.J.) forced a Hawks turnover and passed ahead to a streaking Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) who sprinted the length of the field, passing to Purcell less than four yards out who in turn flipped it to a trailing Dolan for the score (5-3). That goal began a 4-0 Richmond run with three of the goals coming a minute span. Another Richmond caused turnover, this one from senior Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa.), led to Purcell's skip shot goal to put UR up 7-3. Brandolini netted one of her own 38 seconds later to push the lead to five, 8-3. The Hawks netted a free position score, a Kelly Butler shot , to cut the lead to 8-4. Richmond would again erupt, this time for the final four goals of the half. Aitken tallied the final three scores of the half in the final 1:30 to give UR a 12-4 edge at the half.
The Hawks scored the first goal of the second stanza but that would be as close as the visitors would come. Aitken's second goal of the half, a 8-yard free position at the 47:12 mark, would vault the senior into first place in the the Richmond record book, passing former great Heather Gardner. The Spiders led by double digits for the majority of the second half in route to their record-breaking 11th win of the season.
