Former Baseball Star Mike Smith Enters Major Leagues

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Former University of Richmond star pitcher, Mike Smith, has been recalled to join the Toronto Blue Jays and is scheduled to start tonight's game against the Anaheim Angels.
Smith, 24, was 3-1 with a 1.57 ERA at Triple-A Syracuse this season. He struck out 17 batters in 23 innings pitched. In just his two-plus minor league seasons, Smith has compiled an 11-5 record on the mound.
A Westwood, Mass. native, Smith recorded a 31-12 mark for Richmond (1997-2000). In 364.2 career innings, he struck out 337 and notched a 4.39 ERA. His 11 wins in 1999 are tied for the most in a single season by a Spider pitcher.
The Blue Jays (8-12) begin a three-game series with the Angels at 10:05 Eastern tonight.
