UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond senior point guard Michele Koclanes (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) has received yet another post-season honor, this time being named to the all-state second team in a vote conducted by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (Va. SIDs).
Richmond's all-time assists leader with 793, Koclanes finished her senior campaign averaging 12.0 ppg and 7.37 apg, ranking her fourth in the NCAA. She also accumulated 221 assists, breaking the school's single-season record for the fourth straight year and also leading the conference for a fourth straight year. Her assist totals rank among the best all-time in the NCAA as her 793 assists is the 20th highest total ever and her average of 7.08 apg is the 13th best average ever in Division I women's basketball. In addition to passing, Koclanes could also score as she reached the 1,000-career point plateau this season and finished her career with 1,205 points, the fifth most ever in the program's history.
Despite the move to the more competitive Atlantic 10 this past season, Koclanes continued to post solid numbers, averaging 11.4 ppg and 8.69 apg in conference action. She led the league with 10 double-digit assists games and recorded eight double-doubles, fourth best in the conference. The point guard also set the school individual game assists record with back-to-back 14 assist games versus Atlantic 10 opponents St. Bonaventure and Dayton, as she also hit the game-winning shot versus the Flyers.
In addition to this newest honor, Koclanes' 2001-02 post-season accolades now include: Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award Finalist, Richmond Times-Dispatch all-state team, third team all-Atlantic 10, Atlantic 10 all-academic team, Philadelphia Sports Connection first team all-Atlantic 10, National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American Athlete.
