UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond received complete games from sophomores Tim Stauffer and Thomas Martin and swept Dayton in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader - 5-1, 3-2 - at Pitt Field. With its 5-1 decision in the first game, Richmond set the all-time mark for wins in a season (44), surpassing the 1995 squad that finished 43-17.
Sophomore Tim Stauffer set another record with his 12th complete game of the season in the opener. The Saratoga Springs, N.Y., native fanned 10 while allowing one run on four hits to raise his record to 13-2. Sophomore Bryan Pritz went 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored in extending his hit streak to 23 games.
In the second game, sophomore Thomas Martin improved to 5-0 after allowing two runs on seven hits in his first complete game of the season. Martin struck out six in the victory. Freshman Brian Ruscello went 2-3 with one RBI and one run scored while sophomore Adam Tidball also went 2-3 with two runs to pace the offense.
GAME 1
The Spiders (45-8, 21-2 Atlantic 10) scored two in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Second baseman Ruscello drove in Chris Dolan with a one-out single through the left side. Left fielder A.J. Board later scored on a Pritz single through the left side.
The game remained that way until the fifth when the Spiders put three runs across and took a 5-0 lead. After the first run scored on a balk, Tidball delivered an RBI single. Tidball and sophomore short stop Matt Craig finished the game 2-3.
Dayton (31-18, 14-9 Atlantic 10) scored its only run in the sixth when Aaron Reesh belted a home run over the right field wall. Stauffer settled and struck out the side in the frame. Dayton starter Mike Rolih slipped to 7-4 after allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits in 5.2 innings.
GAME 2
Richmond's Tidball doubled to lead off the second and Ruscello traded places with him for the first run of the game. Ruscello later scored on a John Cronin single through the left side and gave the Spiders a 2-0 lead after two.
Richmond added a run in the fourth when Tidball scored on a Board fielder's choice. Dayton responded with a pair on a two-run homer from Dave Schindler in the fifth. It would be all the Flyers could muster against Martin.
Dayton's leadoff hitter Tom Beechem went 3-4 in the game. Starter Mike Kerins fell to 8-3 after allowing three runs on seven hits.
Richmond and Dayton will play the 2002 regular-season finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 12.
