Lacrosse Falls In Atlantic 10 Championship

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Top-seeded Temple earned its second consecutive Atlantic 10 lacrosse title Saturday afternoon with its 14-8 victory against second-seed Richmond on Duquesne's Rooney Field. With their win, the Owls earn the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Temple's Liz Frengs led the game with four goals and two assists for six points on the day while Noelle Cebron added three goals and two assists for five points. Deanna Radcliffe netted three goals and added one assist for four points as well. Sheena Oommen recorded 12 saves in goal for the Owls.
Jennifer cielewich, Kristy Gallagher and Libby Berlacher each scored twice for Richmond with Berlacher adding an assist for a team-best three points. Keeper Kelly Johnson registered seven saves on the day.
Cebron put the Owls on the board first 58 seconds into action from Robin Keevan before Gallagher answered back with an unassisted goal for the Spiders. Richmond took a 4-1 lead with scores in the 8th (Carrie Aitken), 13th (Berlacher) and 15th (Polly Purcell) minutes, but saw Temple answer back with an unassisted goal by Tiffany Pulaski for a 4-2 deficit. The Owls scored three goals over the next two minutes to take a 5-4 lead over Richmond at the 19:07 mark. The Spiders' Cielewich netted a free-position goal at 20:56 to tie the game at 5-5, but Temple hit back-to-back goals at 28:11 and 28:55 from Radcliffe and led 8-5 at the half.
The Owls extended their lead to 10-5 with scores in the 35th and 42nd minutes followed by Richmond's goal by Gallagher in the 48th minute for a 10-6 game. The Owls held a 14-7 advantage with just over three minutes remaining before allowing one final Richmond goal at 57:30 for the 14-8 final.
Richmond's Berlacher set a record with 10 ground balls, while the team's 87 for the championship was a record. Richmond also set the all-time mark with 71 shots.
Senior Libby Berlacher and Jennifer Cielewich were named to the All-Championship team. Temple's Liz Frengs earned Most Outstanding Player.
