Philadelphia, Pa. -- A 47-yard strike from senior quarterback D'Arcy Wills to senior wide-out Boyd Ouden gave Richmond a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter of the 2002 season-opener at Temple, but the Owls answered with 31 unanswered points to capture a 34-7 win before 15,329 fans at historic Franklin Field.
The Owls outgained the Spiders 379-204 and overcame 10 penalties in the victory. Senior Tanardo Sharps did the most damage, gaining 121 yards on 30 carries. Sophomore Mike McGann ran an efficient offense, completing 18-of-32 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns.
Richmond's defense played well in the first half despite facing bad field position. The Owls took over deep in Spider territory but were held to -2 yards before converting on a 31-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead at 6:11 of the first quarter.
After a Deashawn Goddard interception, one of three Richmond picks in the contest, set up the Spiders at the Temple 47, Wills and Ouden connected on a timing streak down the middle of the field.
Temple's touchdown late in the first half put them in front to stay, while the Spiders managed only 104 second-half yards.
Senior Dan McNair made a career-high six catches for 56 yards in a losing effort. Wills finished the game 8-16 for 133 yards and was hindered by two interceptions.
The Spiders' Danny Young made two interceptions in the game -- the first two of his collegiate career. The sophomore made both of his steals in the endzone, including one spectacular one-handed diving pick. Senior Adrian Archie led the visitors with 13 tackles.
