Richmond, Va.. -- Senior Maurice Newbill slipped through the line and blocked a potential game-winning, 18-yard field goal as the University of Richmond held on for a 15-13 win against No. 9 Delaware at UR Stadium.
The Spiders went ahead 12-0 with consecutive touchdowns in the second quarter. Sophomore Lee Williams powered in from two yards out for his first touchdown as a Spider. Freshman Stacy Tutt followed with his first collegiate touchdown pass, a 25-yard strike to junior Boyd Ouden, that gave Richmond a 12-0 lead.
Ouden finished the game with a career-high in receptions (7) and receiving yards (162). The Spiders had their first extra-point attempt blocked and failed to convert on a two-point conversion after the second touchdown.
Delaware struck late in the second when they capped a six-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run by Keith Burnell. Richmond regained momentum before the break when senior Doug Kirchner booted a 43-yard field goal as time expired to extend Richmond's lead to 15-7.
After a scoreless third quarter, Delaware closed within two on an Andy Hall two-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed and left the Blue Hens down two at the 12:18 mark.
Both teams traded possessions, before Delaware mounted their final drive. With 3:29 showing on the clock, Delaware moved 45 yards all the way down to the Richmond one-yard line before the drive stalled. Kicker Scott Collins and Delaware were denied when Newbill blocked the attempt.
Senior safety Ramon Richeson enjoyed a stellar game, making 23 tackles, including one for loss. He also recovered a fumble in the victory. Senior Adrian Archie continued his strong play with 12 tackles, including one for loss.
The Blue Hens outgained the Spiders, 450-373, on the afternoon.
