Spiders Fall Short Against No. 7 Furman

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Billy Napier threw for 219 yards and rushed for a 1-yard touchdown Saturday to lead No. 7 Furman past No. 22 Richmond 17-7.
Both teams scored on their first possession of the game. A 71-yard Furman drive was capped by a 4-yard touchdown run by Hindley Brigham.
The Spiders (1-2) had an 81-yard drive end with a 1-yard run by quarterback D'Arcy Wills.
The Paladins (2-1) added a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter by Danny Marshall to take a 10-7 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, following a Danny Young interception, the Spiders pushed the ball to Furman's 1. Justin Porter stopped Wills on fourth down to end the Spider possession.
The Paladins opened the fourth quarter with a 69-yard drive, which Napier finished with a 1-yard touchdown. The Spiders missed a 40-yard field goal by Doug Kirchner and Furman ran out the clock.
Napier finished 19-for-26 for 219 yards. Bear Rinehart caught 9 passes for 94 yards. Furman did not have a penalty in the game and outgained the Spiders 385 to 249.
