UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.- Junior Tony Dobbins (Mitchellville, Md.) matched a career-high in points (26) and steals (6), in leading Richmond (10-6, 4-1) to a 63-57 Atlantic 10 victory over George Washington (6-9, 0-4) on Tuesday evening at the Robins Center.
The Spiders received double-digit scoring from three other players as Mike Skrocki, Jeff Myers and Eric Zwayer chipped in 10 points apiece. Colonials guard Chris Monroe led all scorers with 27 points, 23 (8-of-10) of those coming in the second half.
The two teams struggled through an ugly first half, combining to go 20-of-55 from the field. The largest lead by either team came at the close of the stanza as a Skrocki layup gave UR a 26-18 lead at intermission.
The Spiders stretched the lead to 10 on two occasions early in the second half and led by as many as nine points with 7:41 remaining. The Colonials, however, would not go away. GW closed the gap, in large part due to a flurry of 3-pointers courtesy of Monroe. He cut the deficit to one (55-54) on a triple with 2:34 on the clock. His former grade and high school rival Dobbins answered, however, sinking a pair of free throws and a driving layup through the paint to push the lead back to five, 59-54, at the 1:47 mark. GW quieted the crowd of 4,218 with a T.J. Thompson 3-pointer from the far baseline on its next possession. Richmond's defense did the rest. After a Myers' 3-pointer rimed off the cylinder with under a minute to play, Monroe attempted to drive the lane on the ensuing possession, only to have his shot blocked in the lane by Skrocki. Richmond gained control of the loose ball and was perfect from the charity stripe (4-4) in the final :27 to seal the win
Richmond, winners of four of its past five games and six of its last eight, travels to Philadelphia this Saturday, January 25, for a 2:00 p.m. showdown at La Salle.
