Tanner scored her 1,000th-point just two minutes into the game with a lay-up to give the Spiders a three-point advantage. Richmond built a seven-point lead (10-3) before the Temple outscored the Spiders 11-3 over the following five minutes and twenty seconds to take their first lead of the contest (14-13). Temple stayed in control of the game for the remainder of the half before the Tanner hit a turnaround jumper in the paint with under a minute on the clock to give the Spiders a 26-25 advantage and set the halftime margin.
Richmond opened the half hitting their first six of seven shots to extend their lead to seven with just over three minutes gone by. The Spiders took their first double-digit lead (10) off a free throw from Tanner with 15:54 on the clock. Richmond led by as many as 14 but Temple went on a 13-3 scoring run to cut the deficit to four.
