RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond guard Ally Sweeney will return to the Spiders for the 2026-27 women's basketball season.
Sweeney, who started 33 games and led a Richmond offense that ranked first in the Atlantic 10 in assists per game (10.0) and steals per game (8.0), paced the Spiders in assists while ranking third in scoring during the 2025-26 campaign. She also finished among the league leaders with a 2.5 assist-to-turnover ratio and 5.0 assists per game, both marks that ranked among the top in the conference. She shared the following statement Saturday afternoon:
"Recent circumstances have resulted in intentional reflection and careful conversations.
My time at Richmond so far has been everything I could've imagined and more. The relationships that are built here and the sense of community is unmatched, and this place has given me so much. It's the people that truly make it so special.
I can't picture spending my last year anywhere else — wearing Spiders across my chest, playing in the Robins Center with my teammates. So, let's run it back one more time.
We can't wait to get to work with Coach Kresge and her staff, and we're so excited for what's to come. Go Spiders!'"
Sweeney returns after helping Richmond to a 26-8 overall record and a 15-3 mark in Atlantic 10 play during the 2025-26 season. She averaged 10.5 points, 4.4 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game while shooting 46.0 percent from the field, 39.9 percent from three-point range and 87.2 percent at the free throw line.
A steady presence in the backcourt, Sweeney recorded 149 assists to lead the team and finished with 357 total points, third-most on the roster. She scored in double figures 19 times during the season, highlighted by a career-high 27 points at VCU and a career-best 13 assists at Dayton.
In Atlantic 10 Conference play, Sweeney averaged 10.6 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 41.3 percent from beyond the arc and 95.0 percent at the free throw line, as she returns as one of the A-10's top returning guards entering the 2026-27 season.
