WILLIAMSBURG, Va.-The University of Richmond cross country teams ran "B" teams in the William and Mary Tribe Open, today, to ensure its top eight runners would be healthy for the upcoming conference championships in two weeks. The women's team ran without six of their top performers and the men without two. The women's team finished fourth overall.
The men's team competed without freshmen standouts John Ciccarelli and Reynolds Chapman. Because only individual times were kept, there aren't any final team rankings for the men.
"Our team ran well today and raced hard as a team," said head coach Steve Taylor. "With two of our top runners resting this weekend, we knew it meant someone would have to step-up a notch. Tim Caramore and Jon Lauder had good races and continued to move well throughout the race. We're still looking to close our 1-5 split. We had a nice pack at three and a half miles, but we let it slip over the last mile of the race. I'm convinced that they can pull it to within 50 seconds, but it has to happen during the competition."
The women's team compete without their top six runners, including Lyndsey Webber and Amanda Russell, but finished fourth overall.
"This was a good opportunity for our younger developing athletes to race up front," said head coach Lori Taylor. "It gave them a chance to step up to scoring positions and to compete in the 6K for the first time ever. Our plan has been to rest our top six runners from the Walt Disney World Invitational last weekend so that they will be well rested for the conference championships in two weeks."
