13th-Ranked Field Hockey Falls to #2 Duke, 3-2

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Despite a second half goal by sophomore Whitney Wells (Clayton, Del.) to tie the contest 2-2, the 13th-ranked University of Richmond field hockey team suffered a loss to Duke University, 3-2, this afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
The Blue Devils got an early lead when they tallied back-to-back goals in the first half. Their first goal came at 13:34, when senior Kim Van Kirk swept a shot passed Richmond goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) and into the corner of the net, with an assist from sophomore Katie Grant. Their second goal happened when sophomore Nicole Dudek scored unassisted at 22:48.
The Spiders responded with two minutes remaining in the half, when sophomore Allie Howard (Lancaster, Pa.) recorded her 13th goal of the year, ending the half 2-1.
In the second half, Wells tied the contest 2-2 with an unassisted goal at 50:27. The goal was Wells' 10th of the season. With less then four minutes remaining, Duke junior Gracie Sorbello netted the game-winning goal, off a penalty corner with assists from Grant and Johanna Bischof.
The Spiders end the regular season with an overall record of 16-3, the best in program history and the Blue Devils improve to 15-2 overall.
Richmond is looking to defend its Atlantic 10 title when it competes in the conference championships in Philadelphia, Pa., November 7-8.
