Bronx, NY -Junior Whitney Sikes (Charlotte, N.C.) netted the game-tying goal to send the University of Richmond women's soccer team into a double overtime match with Fordham, but fell 3-2. With the loss the Spiders drop to 9-8-2 overall and 7-3-1 in A-10 play, while Fordham improves to 11-5-2 overall and a conference mark of 7-2-2.
The Spiders started the scoring in the 24th minute as senior Bethany Shewmaker (Chapel Hill, N.C.) tallied her second goal of the season after taking a shot off the crossbar that hit the ground and rolled into the net.
The Rams tied the game late in the half, as Lena Daragjati put home the rebound off a Corey Dunfey shot for her second goal of the year.
In the second half, Fordham took the 2-1 lead at the 50:59 mark, after Richmond was called for a handball in the box. Holly Laubinger then converted on the penalty kick for her third goal of the season. The Spiders bounced right back at the 70:09 mark as Sikes scored her fourth goal of the year on a header off senior Edda Gardarsdottir's (Reykjavik, Iceland) cross.
The game would then go into overtime with each team having one shot in the first ten minutes. Fordham then won the game as Leah Jerome took a half volley pass from Katie Noon and scored on a chip shot over senior goalkeeper Megan Cox (Raleigh, N.C.) at the 105:48 mark of overtime.
Richmond ended the game outshooting Fordham, 21-12. Cox registered five saves, while Fordham goalkeeper Shannon Misiaszek had seven saves in the contest.
