RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Whitney Sikes scored the game-winning goal to lead #3 Richmond to a 1-0 upset of #2 Fordham in the semi-finals of the Atlantic 10 Championships tonight at UR Stadium. In the evening's first game, top-seeded Dayton shut-out #4 Xavier 2-0. In a repeat match-up from 2001's title game, Dayton and defending champion Richmond will battle for an automatic bid to the 2003 NCAA Tournament in the Atlantic 10 Championship game at 1 p.m. on Sunday at UR Stadium.
"The game was a real struggle. We didn't have much left after night but we put together an incredible effort. I was worried about our key players but amazed at how well the freshman played. This was a real team accomplishment," commented head coach Peter Albright.
With the win, Dayton improves to 13-5-2 while Xavier ends the year with a 12-8-1 mark. Richmond's record moves to 11-8-2, while Fordham concludes with a 11-6-2 mark.
In the second game, after a scoreless first half, Sikes was able to take Kelsey Blank's free kick and knock the ball past Fordham goalkeeper Shannon Misiaszek for the game's only score.
The Spiders outshot the Rams 18-7 as both teams were unable to take advantage of numerous scoring opportunties.
