Women's Basketball Tops Arkansas State 76-56

BATON ROUGE, La. - Senior Amber Goppert recorded her second consecutive double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 76-56 victory over Arkansas State in the opening round of the www.womenscollegehoops.com Classic this evening at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Spiders improve to 6-1 while the Lady Indians suffer their first loss of the season, falling to 7-1.
Sophomore Araceli Gil and freshman Christina Campion also scored in double-digits as each contributed 10 points. Sophomore Alison Mitchell added a career-high eight points off the bench for the Spiders.
Arkansas State was led by Catriece Webster's ten points.
Richmond jumped to an early lead with Goppert scoring seven of the Spiders' first nine points. Richmond took their first double-digit lead (10) of the game at the 8:23 mark off a lay-up from Goppert as they held the Lady Indians scoreless for three minutes.
Mitchell hit two free throws to give Richmond an 18 point advantage (38-20), their largest of the half, with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period. Amber Abraham connected on a long three-point basket for ASU with seven seconds on the clock to set the halftime score at 41-29.
In second half action, Richmond rattled off nine unanswered points, including a three-point basket from Campion and consecutive steals and lay-ups from Gil and Goppert, to take a 21 point lead at the 16:14 point. The Spiders held a comfortable advantage during the remainder of the game, allowing the Lady Indians to get no closer than 15 points, before claiming the 76-56 win.
The Spiders shot the ball well, going 29-53 for .593 percent, while holding ASU to .328 from the field.
Richmond dominated the boards, grabbing 45 rebounds to the Lady Indian's 28.
With the win, the Spiders advance to the championship game of the www.womenscollegehoops.com Classic, facing either #16 LSU or Kent State tomorrow at 8:00 p.m EST.
