Women's Basketball Defeats VCU 75-58

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Christina Campion scored a career-high 18 points to lead the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 75-58 victory and claim their second consecutive Women's Basketball City Challenge this afternoon in the Massey Cancer Center Showcase at the Robins Center. With their fifth consecutive win over the Rams, Richmond improves to 8-3 while VCU falls to 3-5.
Junior Kate Flavin recorded her third consecutive double-double, and sixth of the season, with an 18-point, 10-rebound performance. Two other Richmond players scored in double-figures for the Spiders as senior Amber Goppert contributed 15 and sophomore Araceli Gil added 11.
The Rams were led by leading scorer Cyndy Wilks' 22 points.
The Spiders controlled the first ten minutes of play, taking their first double-figure lead at the 13:06 mark off a jumper from Flavin. The Rams struggled from the field, hitting only .318 percent of their shots in the opening period as Richmond held a 46-23 advantage at the half.
In second half action, the Spiders held as much as a 28 point lead before claiming the 75-58 win.
All ten Richmond players saw game action for the second consecutive outing.
Richmond held a 44-32 advantage on the boards, grabbing 18 offensive rebounds for 16 second-chance points.
The Spiders open Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, January 3 when they face Dayton at 2:00 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio.
