Women's Basketball Opens A-10 Play with Win

DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Kate Flavin recorded her fourth consecutive double-double to lead the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 66-51 victory over University of Dayton in both team's conference opener this afternoon at the UD Arena. The Spiders, riding a three game win steak, improve to 9-3 overall, 1-0 in the conference while the Flyers fall to 2-10, 0-1 in the A-10.
Flavin led all scorers with 28 points, equaling her previous career high, and grabbed 12 rebounds. Senior Amber Goppert scored an even dozen for the Spiders and freshman Christina Campion was one rebound shy of her first career double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Dayton's Stefanie Miller scored her 1,000th career-point in today's contest and led the Flyers with 13 points. Katie Butler chipped in 12 for Dayton.
Richmond jumped to a quick 4-0 lead as Goppert and Flavin converted Dayton turnovers into a pair of fast break lay-ups. The Spiders held an 11-1 advantage after the game's opening four minutes after the Flyers missed their first nine field goal attempts.
Dayton outscored Richmond 17-6 over the following eight minutes of play to take their first lead of the game off Katie Butler's three-point basket from the left corner. Richmond regained a 25-22 advantage with Campion scoring the Spiders' next six points. Flavin totaled Richmond's final four points to give the Spiders a slight 33-29 lead.
Richmond took a ten-point lead (45-35) off of Saona Chapman's three-point shot at the 12:42 mark. In a four-minute span, Flavin scored nine of Richmond's 11 points with the Spiders taking their largest lead of the game (18) with just over three minutes remaining before leaving with the 66-51 win.
Richmond recorded 20 fast break points and held the Flyers scoreless in the transition game.
The Spiders are back in action on Monday evening as they take on Xavier at 7 p.m.
