WASHINGTON D.C.- The University of Richmond women's basketball team handed the Georgetown Hoyas (4-1) their first loss of the season with a 62-60 victory tonight at McDonough Gym. Sophomore Saona Chapman hit three free throws in the final 30 seconds of the contest to give the Spiders (4-1) the win.
Senior Amber Goppert, one of three Richmond players in double-figures, scored a team-high 15 points and dished out three assists. Sophomore Araceli Gil recorded four assists and four steals in the contest while junior Kate Flavin recorded her third double-double of the season with a 14-point, 11-rebound performance.
The Spiders held the advantage during the entire first half, taking a 20-15 lead at the 8:41 point while holding the Hoyas scoreless for four minutes. A fast-break lay-up from Gil, off a steal from Flavin, gave Richmond a 23-17 edge with just under six minutes remaining. Gil connected on a three-point basket with 17 seconds on the clock to set the halftime margin at 30-26.
Richmond opened the second half with a 7-2 scoring run to build a nine-point advantage at the 16:36 mark. Flavin put the score at 51-42 with an old-fashioned three-point play with less than ten minutes remaining in the half.
Georgetown's Mary Lisicky hit a three-point basket to tie the contest at 55-55 at the 3:38 mark but Chapman responded with a ten-foot jumper to restore the Spiders' lead. Holding a precarious one-point lead, Richmond turned the ball over after a shot-clock violation and the Hoyas took their first lead (60-59) of the game off a pair of free throws from Carmen Bruce.
With 21 seconds remaining, Chapman connected on two free throws to put the score at 61-60. Georgetown's Varda Tamoulianis missed a jumper and Flavin secured the rebound for Richmond with four seconds left on the clock. A quick Hoya foul sent Chapman to the line for the Spiders and she hit one of two attempts to give Richmond a two-point lead. Georgetown's last-second half-court shot hit the rim and the Spiders were able to pull out the 62-60 win.
The Hoyas were led by Bethany LeSueur's 19 points.
Richmond capitalized on Georgetown's mistakes, scoring 26 points off the Hoyas' 15 turnovers.
After finals, the Spiders are back in action on Sunday, December 14 when they host Liberty University at 2:00 p.m.
