RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond women's basketball head coach Alisa Kresge announced the addition of Sam Brenner as assistant coach/chief of staff on Friday.
Brenner arrives at Richmond following a stint as chief of staff for the women's basketball program at VCU from 2023-26.
"I've had the opportunity to know Sam and watch her continue to grow in this profession, and it's been incredibly impressive," Kresge said. "She has a unique ability to break the game down, paired with a real passion for analytics and problem-solving. Sam is proactive in everything she does and consistently looks for ways to make those around her better. What stands out most is her genuine love for helping student-athletes succeed, not just on the court, but in every area of their lives."
At VCU, Brenner handled both internal and external operations for the program, including donor and alumni relations, NIL calendars, international student onboarding and budget oversight and team statistical analytics.
Before arriving at VCU, Brenner spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Brown. During her time with the Bears, she was responsible for scouting opponents, assisting in player development, overseeing summer camps and coordinating film operations. Brown led the Ivy League in steals and blocks during the 2022-23 season.
Prior to Brown, Brenner served as associate head coach at UT Permian Basin from 2018-21, where she worked primarily with the program's post players while also overseeing operations, including team travel, meals, equipment distribution and camp scheduling. She additionally served as the campus and community liaison for the program.
Brenner also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Franklin Pierce from 2016-18. In that role, she assisted with recruiting, operations, scouting, academic advising and community service while working closely with the team's post players.
As a student-athlete, Brenner played collegiately at Vermont and Adelphi. She appeared in 32 games at Vermont before transferring to Adelphi, where she started 53 games and helped lead the program to a Northeast 10 Championship, NCAA Tournament appearance and a No. 3 national ranking.
Brenner, a Nashua, N.H. native, earned her bachelor's degree in sport management from Adelphi before completing her MBA with a concentration in sport management at Franklin Pierce.
