UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - One record fell as the University of Richmond's swimming and diving team celebrated four seniors final home dual meet. The Spiders (8-5) defeated Navy (8-4) 186-111 with Katie Shipe (Mendon, N.Y.), Leigh Figh (Montgomery, Ala.), Elizabeth Cook (Rockville, Va.), and Kimberly Green (Washington D.C.) competing in their last home meet.
Freshman Brooke Boncher (West Newbury, Mass.) broke another record in the 200-yard butterfly grabbing first in 2:05.32. Classmate Anne Kirchner (Winter Park, Fla.) followed with second-fastest time of 2:05.43. Boncher also grabbed first in the 100-yard freestyle (51.93) and 100-yard butterfly (55.94). Sophomore Mary Adams (Williamsburg, Va.) scooped up gold honors in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.65) and 400-yard individual medley (4:23.59).
Seniors Cook and Figh each earned first places in their events. In the 1000-yard freestyle, Figh beat her nearest competition, teammate Laura Thomas (Sydney, Australia), by ten seconds with a time of 10:38.03. Cook grabbed top honors in the 100-yard backstroke (59.25) and 200-yard backstroke (2:05.12). In the 50-yard freestyle, Green had one of her best dual meet performances posting a time of 25.26 for fourth. The lone senior diver, Shipe, led the way in the 1-meter event with a score of 237.00.
Fellow diver Laura MacHaffie (Concord, Mass.) tallied 228.37 points in the 3-meter to grab first as the only Spider competing in that event.
Cook, Figh, Green, and Shipe will return to the pool once more at the Atlantic 10 Championships Thursday, February 20 through Saturday, February 22.
