UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond's baseball team has garnered its highest ever ranking from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The Spiders rank ninth on their February 17 poll, beating out last year's highest ranking of 11th from NCBWA.
The Spiders, who have yet to play a game, also rank on Baseball America's and Collegiate Baseball's weekly polls at 15th. They moved up from a preseason ranking of 16th by Collegiate Baseball, but held steady in Baseball America's poll. Richmond also ranks in Sports Weekly/ESPN Coaches poll at 18th, which they have held since the preseason rankings.
Making program history earlier in the season, Richmond earned preseason recognition from all four polls. They ranked 11th by NCBWA, 15th by Baseball America, 16th by Collegiate Baseball, and 18th by Sports Weekly/ESPN. These rankings marked the first time a Spider baseball team earned preseason recognition.
Richmond opens the season at the Charleston Crab House Challenge Friday, February 21 at 1:30 p.m. against Drexel. The Spiders will face N.C. State on Saturday, February 22 at 1:30 p.m. In the early game, 10:00 a.m., on Sunday, February 22, Richmond and Kentucky will take the field.
