Spider Baseball Takes Series Opener Over La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Richmond baseball team shutout La Salle University, 6-0, Thursday afternoon at DeVincent Field in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
Richmond, now 15-15 on the year and 4-6 in league play, and La Salle, 15-16 on the season and 4-6 conference action, return to DeVincent Field for game two of the conference series Friday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Spiders got on the board in the first inning. Michael Elko scored on Dylan Winebrenner's first of three doubles in the game. Sean Scanlon brought in Winebrenner with a double of his own to give UR a 2-0 lead.
In the third, Evan Wilson led off with a walk then moved up to third on Elko's double to left. Both Wilson and Elko scored on Winebrenner's second double. After he stole third, Winebrenner scored on RJ Johnson Jr.'s infield base hit, pushing the Spider's lead to 5-0.
Elko pushed in RJ Rickabaugh with an infield hit in the fourth to give UR a 6-0 lead. Elko finished the day going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI
On the mound, Chase Topolski was able to get out of jams on the base paths with the help from his defense in his five and a third of an inning of action on the mound. Topolski scattered seven hits, two walks, two hit batters and five strikeouts.
Chayse Gruber continued the shutout action on the mound. He tossed three and two-thirds of an inning, allowing one hit, two walks and two hit batters while striking out four to collect his first save of the season.
