UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) scored four goals to lead the 20th-ranked University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to a 12-5 win over Duquesne University this afternoon at Lacrosse Field. The Spiders improve to 1-3 overall, 1-0 in the conference while the Dukes fall to 3-3, 1-1 in the Atlantic 10.
Senior Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J.) contributed two goals, her first of the season, and both Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) and Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) added two tallies for the Spiders.
Kelly Mulford scored two goals for the visiting Dukes.
The Dukes held a 1-0 advantage with just two minutes gone by in the first half, but Richmond evened the score within ten seconds with a tally from Purcell. After the game reached its second tie at 2-2, the Spiders rattled off eight answered goals to take a 10-2 advantage. Gallagher started the run with a contested shot from the near the eight-meter and the Spiders converted three consecutive eight-meter free-position shots to set the score at 6-2. Dolan went on a scoring frenzy, scoring three of her four goals within a five-minute span and a tally from Berlacher completed the Spiders scoring run. The Dukes ended the half with a goal from Mulford as the Spiders held a 10-3 halftime lead.
During a rainy second half, both teams could only muster two goals each. The Dukes cut the deficit to six after a goal from Flocco early in the period, but would not get any closer as the Spiders took the 12-5 win.
Richmond is back in action on Wednesday, March 19, when they host 2002 National-Runner up Georgetown at Lacrosse Field. The game, rescheduled from an earlier date, will be held at 3:30 p.m.
