No. 12 Baseball Falls to VCU, 9-4

RICHMOND, Va. - VCU rallied in the sixth to go on a three-inning scoring run to hand Richmond its second loss of the season, after the Spiders captured the first two games of the three-game weekend set. Four Spiders had two hits in the 9-4 defeat at the Diamond. Richmond falls to 13-2, while the Rams improve to 16-5.
After a 30-minute delay because of rain, the teams started the third game of the series. Richmond posted the first runs in the second. Junior catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md.) belted a two-run double, scoring Michael Galligan (Woodbury, N.Y.) and Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J.).
Richmond continued in the third inning with Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.), A.J. Board (Raleigh, N.C.), and Galligan reaching on singles. Dolan's sacrifice fly plated Fasano, while advancing Board and Galligan. Board touched home on a Tidball groundout.
The Spiders threatened with eight hits in the first 4.1 innings, until Ram reliever Cla Meredith took the mound.
VCU tallied two runs in the sixth to tie the game, 4-4, and added another five in the next two innings to seal the win. The Rams were led by Eric Latura's 3-for-4 day at the plate.
Richmond's Matt McLoughlin (San Diego, Calif.) took the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed two hits and two earned runs in 1.0 inning. Senior righty Mike McGirr (Lexington, Mass.) started for the Spiders, striking out six Rams in 5.0 innings. McGirr allowed four hits and two earned runs. VCU's Brian Marshall (1-1) earned the win, striking out four in 2.1 innings.
Richmond holds the series lead, 2-1. The squads will meet one more time on April 9 at Pitt Field. The Spiders return to Pitt Field on Tuesday, March 18 at 3:00 p.m. against Radford.
