UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team will host Georgetown University in first-round action of the 2003 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The game will be played on Thursday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m.
The Spiders (19-10) are making their second all-time WNIT appearance after the 1988-89 team advanced to the third round before falling to Notre Dame. Richmond, under first-year head coach Joanne Boyle, returns to post-season play for the first time in 12 years. The Spiders last post-season appearance came when the 1990-91 team competed in the NCAA tournament.
"We're very excited about the opportunity to participate in post-season play," Boyle commented. "This year's team is laying the groundwork for the future of the program."
Richmond's 19 victories are the most wins for the program since the 1991-92 squad posted an identical mark. In their second year of Atlantic 10 competition, the Spiders finished third in the West Division after posting a 9-7 record in league play.
Georgetown finished with a 15-13 record after falling in the Big East Tournament to Seton Hall.
The two teams have met eight times with the Hoyas holding a 5-3 advantage. The series began in 1981 and the teams last met on December 2, 1989 when the Hoyas recorded a 52-43 win in Washington, D.C. The squads have played four times at the Robins Center and the Spiders have won three of the four contests.
Tickets are general admission - $6 for adults and youth. Richmond students will be admitted free of charge, compliments of the athletic department, by showing a valid student ID. For tickets call 1-888-Spider-1.
