Richmond Women Falls 64-51 to George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Richmond (18-8, 9-6) fell 64-51 to George Washington University (21-6, 15-1) in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action this afternoon at the Smith Center. The Spiders shot a season-low 30.2% from the field but connected on a season-high 89.5% from the free throw line.
Cathy Joens scored a game-high 25 points for the Colonials and Ugo Oha chipped in 13.
Richmond was led by sophomore Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) who recorded her thirteenth double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C.) contributed ten points and ten rebounds, her eleventh double-double. Other Richmond players in double-figures were Amber Goppert (Malone, N.Y.) with 13 points and Cammy Desmond (Midlothian, Va.) with 11.
George Washington took an 11-6 advantage with 14:18 on the clock after Marsheik Witherspoon cut down the lane for a wide-open lay-up. Richmond's Araceli Gil (Santa Barbara, Calif.) hit a long three as the shot-clock expired to cut the Colonials lead to two with just over ten minutes remaining but the Spiders would not score another point over the following six minutes.
George Washington's largest lead of the first half (9) came off a basket from Ana Montanana with 6:11 left in the half. Desmond hit a jumper from the right-hand side to bring the Spiders within five and set the halftime margin at 26-21. Richmond was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
The Colonials took their first double-digit lead (10) to open the half but Richmond outscored George Washington 11-1 over the next seven minutes and cut the deficit to one. Desmond's three-point shot from the left-hand corner put the score at 37-37, the game's first tie, at the 10:19 point. Richmond missed four of their next six shots, which allowed the Colonials to rebuild their lead to seven.
The Spiders got within five points with just under four minutes remaining but Joens rattled off four consecutive baskets in a minute and a half span and George Washington cruised to the 64-51 victory.
The Colonials dominated in the paint, outscoring Richmond 40-18.
Next up, the Spiders travel to Kingston, Rhode Island to participate in the Atlantic 10 women's basketball tournament. Richmond will face St. Bonaventure in the opening round on Thursday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m.
