UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Two University of Richmond women's lacrosse players received weekly conference accolades as announced by the league this afternoon. Junior Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) was named the Atlantic 10 co-Player of the Week and freshman Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) was selected as the co-Rookie of the Week after helping lead Richmond to a 2-1 mark.
After failing to score in the Spiders' loss to #4 Georgetown, Purcell netted four goals and tallied one assist in Richmond's 17-12 win over New Hampshire on Friday, March 21. She ended the week with a two goal, three assist performance in the 14-10 win over Virginia Tech on Sunday. Purcell, a member of the 2002 Atlantic 10 All-Conference team, leads the team in scoring with 16 goals. Her 10 caused turnovers tie for team-best honors and she has totaled 15 ground balls, 11 in last week's games.
McGuire, receiving her first weekly conference honor, registered nine goals in Richmond's three games. The midfielder scored a team-high six goals, three in each half, against Virginia Tech on Sunday, March 23, in addition to recording three draw controls. Earlier in the week, McGuire tallied three goals in the win over New Hampshire. She currently leads all Spider freshmen in scoring with 13 goals.
The Spiders end a six-game home stand against Ohio University on Saturday, March 29, at Lacrosse Field. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
