UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) scored six goals, including the game-winner, to lead the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to a 15-12 win over Ohio University this afternoon at Crenshaw Field. With their third consecutive win, the Spiders improve to 4-4 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 3-4.
Both Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) and Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) contributed three goals for the Spiders and Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in two. Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) rounded out the scoring for Richmond with one tally.
Lindsey Hart scored seven goals for the visiting Bobcats and Lynz Keys added two.
Richmond started the scoring early, with Purcell's first tally coming less than two minutes into the game. The Bobcats responded in under a minute as Hart netted her first score of the afternoon. Habicht found a wide-open McGuire in front of the net to give the Spiders a 2-1 advantage at the 6:18 mark.
Richmond scored four goals to Ohio's two scores throughout the following 20 minutes of play to build a 6-4 lead. Each team added an additional tally before the end of the period and the halftime margin was set at 7-5.
A free-position goal from McGuire opened second-half action and the Bobcats scored on their next possession with a score from Hart. Habicht gained possession on the ensuing draw and drove the field to net her first goal of the contest and give the Spiders a 9-6 advantage.
The Bobcats scored four unanswered goals to take their first lead of the game at 10-9 with just over 15 minutes remaining. A strong one-on-one move from Berlacher evened the score (10-10) and the Spiders scored the game's next three goals to build a 13-10 lead. The Bobcats cut the deficit to two (13-11) but Purcell added two more tallies and Ohio was unable to muster more than one more goal to put the final score at 15-12.
