No. 17 Baseball Slugs Past Dayton, 8-2 and 5-4

DAYTON, Ohio - Senior Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J.) belted the game-winning single to lead Richmond to a 5-4 win over Dayton in the second game of today's Atlantic 10 doubleheader. The Spiders (26-6, 8-2 A-10) defeated the Flyers (9-23, 1-10 A-10) 8-2 in the first game.
In the first game, junior Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill.) put the Spiders on the scoreboard in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Richmond added another run in the second frame on a double by junior Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.), that plated designated hitter Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J.). Shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) tacked on another run in the third after singling to left center, stealing second and third, and scoring on Jim Fasano's (Horsham, Pa.) groundout.
After a scoreless fourth, Richmond scored three runs to take a 6-0 lead. LeNoir stole second and third before scoring the fourth run. Pritz touched home on a Michael Galligan (Woodbury, N.Y.) single and then Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) crossed the plate on a Dolan walk. Dayton responded putting two runs on the scoreboard in its half of the frame. Third baseman Joe McSoley scored on Jeff Bourassa's triple. Bourassa then scored the Flyers second and final run.
The Spiders responded with a Pritz run in the sixth for a 7-2 lead. Pritz touched home on a Zeskind single after walking and stealing second. In the seventh, catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md.) belted a single to drive in Galligan for the eighth and final run of the game.
In the second game, Richmond posted two runs in the first, but Dayton responded with three in its half of the inning. Reaver scored on Fasano's single to right field. Chiaravalloti's groundout then plated Zeskind for the two-run lead. Dayton answered with four runs in their first two at-bats. After Rory Thornton scored on Patrick Flynn's single, Kris Kemmer hit a two-run homer to take a 3-2 lead. The Flyers extended the lead to 4-2 on a Bourassa run in the second.
After four innings of scoreless play, the Spiders strung together five singles and a sacrifice bunt in the top of the seventh to rally to a 5-4 win. LeNoir and Pritz singled and advanced a base on a Reaver sac bunt. Zeskind stroked an infield single, scoring LeNoir. Fasano then singled to drive in Pritz for the tying run. For the fifth hit of the frame, Chiaravalloti ripped a base knock to left center field and scored Zeskind for the winning run.
Junior hurler Tim Stauffer (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) threw his sixth complete game and earned his sixth win. Stauffer (6-1) struck out eight, allowing five hits and two runs, one earned. In the second contest, Jason Bolinski (Hockessin, Del.) fanned six and did not allow an earned run for his fifth win. Dayton's Howard Corona (0-3) and Drew Cheseboro (1-4) took the losses.
Richmond and Dayton conclude the series at Stuart Field (Dayton, Ohio) tomorrow, Sunday, April 13 at Noon.
