Women's Lacrosse Opens Tournament Play

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Looking to capture its first conference crown, the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team faces second-seeded Massachusetts on Friday, May 2 at Geasey Field on the Temple University campus. Richmond, the number three seed, will play 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game, scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
The Spiders are currently 10-6, 5-2 in conference play, after ending their regular season schedule with three consecutive wins.
Earlier in the season, Massachusetts defeated Richmond 11-6 in Amherst. In the 2002 Atlantic 10 Championships, the second-seeded Spiders defeated the Minutewomen 9-5 in first round action before falling to Temple in the title game.
Richmond's Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) is currently leading the conference in scoring with 65 points from 41 goals and 24 assists. Purcell is also ranked ninth in the country in points per game, averaging 4.06 per outing.
The Spiders are among the Top-20 in the nation in three statistical categories as Richmond ranks 15th in both scoring offense (11.88) and draw controls (11.88) and 19th in caused turnovers (11.31).
The Championship game will be held on Saturday, May 3 at 1:00 p.m.
