NORWICH, Conn. - Sophomore Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.) ripped two doubles and went 2-for-4, but it was not enough as No. 1 Richmond fell 2-1 to No. 5 Xavier in the fourth game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Spiders fall to 42-13, while Xavier improves to 25-24-2.
Richmond put the first run on the scoreboard in the third. Leftfielder Michael Galligan (Woodbury, N.Y.) singled into left field. Galligan eventually scored when centerfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill.) reached on error by Xavier first baseman Mark Andres.
Xavier responded, knotting up the game at 1-1 in the fourth. Leadoff hitter Eric Greenwell stroked a single and then scored on an Andres groundout. The Muskateers added another run in the seventh on an Eric Armstrong double for a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, freshman Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) stroked a two-out single. A-10 Player of the Year, Fasano belted a double down the right field line to send Zeskind to third. Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J.) ripped a line drive into right field, which Xavier's Ryan Schreen caught diving to end the scoring threat and inning.
Spider's ace and two-time A-10 Pitcher of the Year Tim Stauffer (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) did not allow a hit in the first 3.0 innings. Stauffer (8-4) struck out 10 while allowing only one earned run in his 10th complete game. Xavier's Jarrett Sues improved to 7-5.
Richmond will play George Washington on Saturday, May 17 at 4:00 p.m. If the Spiders win that game, they will play the loser of the seventh game at 7:30 p.m.
