UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond junior Tim Stauffer was selected fourth overall by the San Diego Padres in today's 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. A finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the top amateur baseball player in the country, Stauffer is the first Spider and Atlantic 10 player ever to be chosen in the first round of the MLB draft.
The Saratoga Springs, N.Y. native has earned All-America honors after each of the past two seasons, already being selected by Collegiate Baseball and Sports Weekly this season. He earned All-America honors by all four major publications in 2002.
The only pitcher in Atlantic 10 history to earn back-to-back Pitcher of the Year honors, Stauffer compiled a 31-13 record and a 2.16 ERA in 51 career appearances. He established the Richmond career record in strikeouts (362) and holds the single-season record for complete games (13 in 2001), victories (15 in 2001) and most consecutive victories (11 in 2001).
Stauffer pitched 346.1 innings in his 51 appearances. He started 45 games and completed an amazing 24 of them (.533 percent). The right-hander posted a 4.7:1 career strikeout to walk ratio.
Stauffer is the 14th Richmond student-athlete to be chosen in the past eight major league drafts. Several of Stauffer's teammates are expected to be chosen in the next two days, adding to the 10 already chosen in the past five years, including a record four draft choices in 1999.
Pitcher Casey Burns, another Spider selected by the San Diego Padres, was taken in the supplemental picks of the first round in 1999.
