Lacrosse's Polly Purcell Selected to U.S. Developmental Team

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond junior Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) was named to the United States Women's Developmental lacrosse team as announced yesterday by US Lacrosse. In addition, Richmond head lacrosse coach Sue Murphy was selected as the Developmental Team head coach and will serve in the position through 2005.
An All-South Region second-team honoree, Purcell started all 17 games for the Spiders and led Richmond in both goals (44) and assists (24). Purcell, a three-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, is also a two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection. The attack finished tenth in the nation in points per game with 4.0.
Head Coach Sue Murphy has led Richmond to back-to-back winning seasons in her two years with the Spiders. Prior to Richmond, Murphy served as head coach at Boston University where she was twice named the America East Coach of the Year.
Twenty-four players were named to both the Elite and Developmental Squads and the two teams will practice together and play exhibition scrimmages against college teams. In addition, the players will participate in activities associated with US Lacrosse Women's Division National Clinic Month in February of 2004.
