UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championships before concluding the 2003 season with a 10-7 mark, their second consecutive winning season under head coach Sue Murphy. The Spiders left their mark on the Richmond record book and finished among the Top-20 in several national statistics.
Richmond ranked 13th in the country in scoring offense (11.82) and draw controls (12.06) and placed 19th in caused turnovers (11.24).
A three-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, junior Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) was named to the All-South Region second team and the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team. The attack finished tenth in the nation in points per game (4.0) and now ranks second in the Richmond record book for career assists (54) and third in career points (137). Purcell's 44 goals, 24 assists and 68 points each rank second for their respective single-season marks.
Junior Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) was an Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection and senior Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) and freshman Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) both received a weekly Atlantic 10 honor.
Facing a demanding schedule, the Spiders' schedule was highlighted by a mid-season five-game winning streak. Richmond received its first national ranking in 15 years as the Spiders opened the season at the No. 19 spot.
