Week 3...
It was a busy weekend for Richmond Women's Basketball. Friday afternoon our first official recruit arrived on campus. I hosted her on Friday and Saturday, meaning that she would be hanging out with me during her stay. Recruiting weekends are always interesting because the coaches have to come up with activities that will be entertaining for the team and the recruit.
Friday evening, the entire team and coaching staff went out to dinner at Pasta Luna, an excellent Italian restaurant. They serve huge portions of food, which is perfect for our team because we like to stuff our faces five to six times a day. After dinner we went back to Saona Chapman's apartment and talked and played "hot potato" for what seemed like a long time. Then at about eleven o'clock, men's basketball manager, Dan Woolley, suggested a 7-eleven run. There was no hesitation by anyone, except maybe our recruit who probably thought we were a little too excited about going to 7-eleven. After 7-eleven we called it a night. My excuse was that "We need to rest up for tomorrow's big bowling matches."
Saturday was a huge day! Kate Flavin picked our recruit and me up to take us to Ukrop's, the best grocery store ever. No one can come to Richmond and not visit Ukrop's. It's like going to Sea World and not seeing Shamu. Next on the agenda was the big bowling competition. Coaches decided they wanted to test our skills, so they divided us into teams based on class. The seniors, Melissa Dymek and Amber Goppert, took our recruit under their wing and guided their team to a victory with the highest average score. Coming off a season-ending knee injury, Melissa tore up the lanes to give her team the victory. The seniors winning wasn't as big of a deal as Coach Boyle outscoring Kate 80-79. Believe me, Coach will never let Kate live that one down. The coaches, after scouting out the competition, had their game plan made up and won the second game. Scores aside, the outfits were the highlights of the day. Kate and I showed up in great outfits, sporting the headbands, wristbands, high-socks, and some "hot" bowling shoes lent to me by a friend. Saturday night we took it easy once again, this time hanging out with some of the men's basketball players. The weekend fun was over and the week means back to work for women's Basketball.
Wednesday at 7 AM was a pool workout with Coach "Tank" Roney, our strength and conditioning coach. It was our first pool workout, and almost became our last, when freshman, Dee Hendrix, in her own words, "almost died." According to Dee, her kickboard "ran away" from her, forcing a struggle to reach the lane line. After this incident, she was rather upset with Coach Roney for not jumping in to save her.
Coach Roney was forced to separate us according to swimming abilities. As a result, Dee, Jamell, and I had to stay out of danger by remaining in the shallow end, while the rest of the team was able to swim freely throughout the entire pool. Though I spend a lot of time at the beach at home, I never go in without a boogie board, explaining why I use a kick board back here for the workouts. I will be the first to admit, pool workouts are not my favorite.
It's Thursday night as I am writing this, and I am ready for another weekend. Along with my fashion partner Kate, I have organized another trip to the bowling lanes with some of the men's Basketball players. I'm hoping to improve not only on my outfit but also my scores.
