UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Former Southern Conference rivals battle this Saturday night at 7 p.m. when Richmond visits Paladin Stadium and ninth-ranked Furman.
The Spiders (0-1) will try and avenge last year's 17-7 loss to Furman that closed the series record to a 15-8 Spider advantage. Furman (1-1) comes off a bye week but has defeated Elon and lost at Clemson already this season.
The Spiders have many people talking after throwing 34 times last week at Delaware, the most since a 1999 game against William & Mary. Senior Bryson Spinner threw for 196 yards while playing in his first game since the 2001 season.

THIS WEEK'S STORYLINES
* A series that dates back to 1922 was renewed last season when Furman defeated Richmond, 17-7, at UR Stadium on Sept. 21. It was the first time these two programs played since a 19-13 Spider victory on Nov. 5, 1977.
* The Spiders are 6-3 in Greenville, but haven't played there since a 13-9 win on Oct. 23, 1976. The first game of this series was also played at Furman, a 13-0 Richmond win, on Oct. 28, 1922.
* The last time Richmond played in the state of South Carolina was Sept. 14, 1996. The Spiders dropped a 13-10 decision to The Citadel in the second game of Coach Reid's second season.
* The Spiders' don't have one player on their roster from South Carolina. Furman junior nose guard Michael Burant (Lexington) is the only Virginian on the Paladin roster.
* Former SoCon rivals, Richmond and Furman have combined for 15 Southern Conference titles. The Spiders won the conference championship in 1968, 1971 and 1975 and shared it with Davidson in 1969. Furman has won more league crowns than any other current or former SoCon member (11).
* Unique Nicknames -- 1, 2, 3. Richmond is the only college with the nickname Spiders. Richmond's first two opponents this season, Delaware (Blue Hens) and Furman (Paladins) also share a unique moniker.
* Tonight's 7 p.m. kick-off marks the Spiders' second and final night game of the 2003 season.
GAME NOTES
100-yard receiver ... Sophomore Stacy Tutt made seven catches for 101 yards at Delaware -- his first game as a wide receiver ... Boyd Ouden posted three games with 100-or-more receiving yards last season ... Richmond has not had a player record 100+ receiving yards in consecutive games since Rod Boothes accomplished the feat three straight weeks during the 1992 season.
Defensive Debuts ... After losing seven starters from last year's defense, the Spiders had to insert new faces into the defensive corps ... Several new players contributed at UD, including sophomore Joe Mallory's game-high 13 stops at corner back; freshman linebacker Lance Gray's six tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and David Freeman's four tackles from the safety position.
Times They Are A' Changin' ... The Spiders passed more than they ran (34-30) at Delaware on Sept. 13 ... It was the first time Richmond had more pass attempts than rush attempts since Oct. 9, 1999, a 41-38 win against Rhode Island ... Richmond threw the ball 37 times and ran it 33 times against the Rams.
Higher Than Usual ... Delaware's 44 points is the most ever scored against Richmond during the Jim Reid era ... The previous high was 41 points, also posted by the Blue Hens, on Oct. 2, 1999 in a 41-33 victory ... The 44-point total is the most a Spider team has allowed since Nov. 5, 1994 when New Hampshire defeated Richmond 42-14 at UR Stadium.
TV Update ... Two of the first three games of the 2003 season will be televised ... The season-opener, a 44-14 loss at Delaware on Sept. 13, was broadcast by CN8, an organization that carries several Delaware games ... The Spiders' home opener, 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 27 against Rhode Island, will also be broadcast by The Football Network ... Richmond's game versus Furman was originally to be carried by TFN, but will not be televised.
