UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team has announced a 2003-04 non-conference schedule that includes a trio of 2003 NCAA Tournament teams and three squads that participated in last year's WNIT.
The Spiders will be tested early as Richmond plays its season opener in Newark, Del. against 2003 WNIT participant Delaware, followed by a home date with SEC member University of Florida. Richmond then heads west to compete in UNLV's LR Shooutout in Las Vegas, facing Georgia Southern in the tournament's opening game and then taking on either UNLV, a 2003 WNIT team, or University of San Diego.
In early December, the Spiders play two postseason teams from a year ago, traveling to the nation's capital to play Georgetown and then hosting Liberty University.
After finals, Richmond will participate in LSU's womenscollegehoops.com Tournament in Baton Rouge, La. The Spiders first play Arkansas State and then face either Kent State or host LSU, the 2003 SEC Tournament Champions who advanced to the Regional Finals in last year's NCAA Tournament. Before heading home for the holidays, Richmond faces Big East opponent University of Miami.
The Spiders conclude their non-conference schedule with home games against CAA members William & Mary and VCU.
"We want to establish ourselves as a nationally-competitive team and in order to accomplish our goals, we need to the play the elite teams in the country," head coach Joanne Boyle commented.
Last season, the Spiders compiled a 21-11 overall record, the first 20+ win season in 12 years, and advanced to postseason play for the first time in over a decade. Making their best-ever postseason appearance, Richmond advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT before falling to eventual champion Auburn.
