Women's Basketball Heads to City of Brotherly Love

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team faces a pair of conference opponents in Temple and La Salle this weekend in Philadelphia. Richmond and Temple play on Friday night at 7 p.m. and the Spiders and Explorers meet at noon on Sunday in an Atlantic 10 Television contest. Friday's game will be broadcast on WXGI-AM 910 and via the internet at www.wxgi.com. Sunday's contest can be heard at www.RichmondSpiders.com and will be televised regionally on Comcast Sports Net Fox and Sports Net Ohio.
The Spiders (13-4, 4-1) are coming off an 82-61 victory over Duquesne on Sunday, January 18. Junior Kate Flavin recorded her ninth double-double of the year with 24 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. Flavin currently leads the Spiders in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.8 ppg and 9.8 rpg, and is ranked nationally among the Top 50 in both categories.
Temple (8-7, 4-0) is coming off a non-conference 64-45 loss to Rutgers on Wednesday night. Sophomore Candace Dupree leads the Owls in both scoring and rebounding.
Friday's contest pits Temple, the league's worst three-point shooting team, against one of the conference's strongest in the Spiders.
GAME NOTES
The Series
Tonight's contest marks the fifth meeting between the two schools with the series tied at 2-2. The teams first met on January 2, 1991 when Richmond claimed an 83-54 win. Last season, the Spiders won the regular season contest but lost to the Owls off a last second shot in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The teams have played once at Richmond has played once at the Liacouras Center, suffering a 69-63 loss in 2002.
The Coaches
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is in her second year on the Spider sidelines and owns a 34-15 record. Temple head coach Dawn Staley is in her third year with the Owls and has compiled a 61-44 record in that time.
Double Trouble
Kate Flavin has recorded 30 career double-doubles, including a conference leading nine this season. In the past two years, Richmond has won 18 of 25 games when Flavin has accomplished this feat. She is currently averaging a double-double in Atlantic 10 action with 20.5 ppg and 10.7 rpg. Last season, she was one of only three players in the league to average a double-double (14.5 ppg and 10.3 rpg) in all games.
Going the Distance
In her career, Kate Flavin has played all 40 minutes in 16 games, including three this season. She set a new career-high when she saw 42 minutes of action against Xavier (1/5). Saona Chapman played all 45 minutes in Richmond's overtime wins against both Delaware (11/21) and Xavier (1/5).
Turning the Ball Over
Richmond has committed 283 turnovers to its opponents' 271 this season, but the Spiders have managed to score 301 points off their opponents' mistakes. In comparison, the competition has managed to score only 242 points off the Spiders' turnovers. The largest discrepancy came against Duquesne (1/18) when the Spiders committed one extra turnover (16-15) but scored 23 points off turnovers compared to the Dukes' two.
From the Bench
Richmond is receiving almost 85% of its point production from its starting line-up. On nine occasions this year, the Spiders' bench has contributed ten points or less. In Richmond's loss at LSU, the bench scored no points. The bench scored a season-high 20 points against both Arkansas State and William & Mary.
That 70's Show
When Richmond scores over 74 points, they have won nine games with the additional four wins coming at 59, 62, 66 and 73 points. In the Spiders' four losses, they have failed to reach that mark.
