Track And Field Turns In Strong Performances At Virginia Tech

UNIVERSITY OF RICHOND, Va.-Senior Diane Schreiber (Johnsonburg, Pa.) smashed her own 20 pound weight school record, yesterday, while the University of Richmond men's and women's track and field team competed in the Virginia Tech Invitational. Her effort of 51' 3.75" (15.64M) placed her fifth in the event surpassing her previous record of 48' 04.5" by nearly three feet. "I still feel like there's more there but I'm happy with that throw", said Schreiber.
Schreiber also won the college section of the shot put placing second overall with a put of 13.12M. The winner was Cleopatra Borel, a post collegiate athlete who currently holds the farthest throw in the World.
Sophomore Diana Morse (Harvard, Mass.) placed 11th in the 1000-meter run (3:01.59), currently the number one performance in the conference. Morse held splits of 33.9 through 200M, 70.7 through 400M, 1:47.7 at 600M, 2:24.1 at the 800M mark to close in 33.1 over the last 200M.
In the women's 3000M Nicole Kurtain (Hamilton, N.J.) ran her personal best time of 10:12.19 in her first race of the New Year. She was followed closely by her teammate Lyndsey Webber (Sayville, NY) who ran 10:14.86. Their performances place them 14th and 16th, respectively and move them into the top-two rankings within the conference.
Ashley Bell (Richmond, VA) qualified for the semi-finals of the 60M hurdles with a time of 9.20. She returned 90 minutes later to improve her performance with a 9.06 clocking to place 10th. She set the school record last winter with an effort of 8.78. Bell also performed well in the triple jump. She placed fourth with an effort of 12.05M.
Senior Kevin Rhue (Virginia Beach, Va.) easily won his heat of the 1000M run leading the men with a seventh-place overall performance of 2:30.59. In the following heat, freshman Reynolds Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) nearly pulled out his first college victory with a second-place finish in section number three (2:33.83).
Senior Jon Lauder (Oakton, Va.) claimed a second-place finish in the second heat of the 3000-meter (8.49.77) closing his last 200M in 32.7 seconds earning him a 12th place overall finish. Tim Caramore (East Greenbush, N.Y.) placed 14th in the mile run (4:21.73) with a negative split effort. After hitting the 800M mark in 2:13 he closed the last half of the race in 2:08. "That felt good", said Caramore. "I like getting back on the track".
The Spiders compete in the Penn State Invitational next weekend on Jan. 30th and 31st.
