Women's Basketball Tops Rhode Island 73-50

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Kate Flavin scored 24 points, including 19 in the first half, as the University of Richmond women's basketball team won their third consecutive Atlantic 10 contest with a 73-50 win over Rhode Island this afternoon at the Robins Center. The Spiders improve to 11-3, 3-0 in the A-10 while the Rams fall to 8-5, 1-1 in the conference.
Flavin was 11-14 from the field and also grabbed eight rebounds and recorded three steals. Senior Amber Goppert finished with 14 points and freshman Christina Campion added 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Rams were led by Peta Kneen's 15 points off a 9-9 performance from the free throw line.
Richmond dominated the opening minutes of the game, taking its first double-digit lead (11) at the 14:27 mark with a lay-up from Flavin, her second of three consecutive baskets. The Spiders limited the Rams to just four points over a ten-minutes span while building a 20+ point lead.
Goppert's lay-up with just over a minute remaining gave Richmond its largest first half lead (39-30) before the Rams scored five points to put the halftime margin at 39-14.
Rhode Island shot .129 percent from the field in the first half, connecting on just four of 31 shots.
In second half action, Rhode Island pulled to within 18 points at the 8:21 point before Richmond claimed the win.
The Spiders recorded a season-high 20 steals but also committed a season-high 26 turnovers.
Richmond looks to continue its perfect home record when La Salle comes to the Robins Center on Monday, January 12 at 7:00 p.m.
